The main break caused extensive damage to the roadway and repair works was complicated by other underground utilities, officials said. A gas line was damaged, but not ruptured, and needs to be repaired before the road can be reopened.

BWS anticipates repair work to go well into tomorrow. Motorists are advised to avoid the general area if possible due to traffic tie-ups.

Officials say because the break is near area where a 16-inch line connects with an 8-inch line, they are unsure which one broke until they dig down to the pipe.

Traffic is being diverted at Namahana Street because of road damage. Special-duty officers are on scene to assist with traffic.

A water wagon has been set up at 439 Keoniana St. Also, there are faucets on hydrants near the corners of Kuamoo Street and Ala Wai and Pau Street and Ala Wai.
