Honolulu Symphony canceling weekend performance, unsure of week after

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Symphony sent out a news release today reminding patrons that its production of Haydn’s choral masterwork “The Creation” has been rescheduled for sometime next year.

The concerts were to take place Saturday and Sunday at Blaisdell Concert Hall.
In a separate e-mail to The Advertiser this morning, Honolulu Symphony Society executive director Majken Mechling said symphony officials are unable at this time to confirm whether next weekend’s Honolulu Pops performance celebrating The Beatles’ 40th anniversary of “Abbey Road” will take place, or if the symphony is rehearsing for the Pops concert.
“At this time we are not able to give you the information that you are seeking regarding any concerts past the postponement of 'The Creation' this weekend,” Mechling stated.
Earlier this week The Advertiser reported that the symphony, the oldest American orchestra west of the Rocky Mountains, may file for bankruptcy protection and the symphony board of directors held a special meeting last Friday to discuss the organization’s continued financial problems. Two months ago, it received a $1.8 million cash infusion to cover operating expenses for this season.
The symphony employs 84 full-time and part-time musicians, and they all took 15 percent pay cuts for this season.
In the news release reminding patrons of this weekend’s cancellations, symphony officials said ticketholders can move their tickets to the rescheduled performance in 2010 or to any of the upcoming Honolulu Symphony Halekulani MasterWorks or Honolulu Symphony Toyota Pops concerts in the 2009-2010 season.
Ticket holders can contact the Honolulu Symphony office at 524-0815 for more information.
