Expect changes in court schedules

By Jim Dooley

The wheels of justice grind to a temporary halt tomorrow when the first "furlough Friday" of state Judiciary employees closes courthouses on all islands.

The Judiciary has issued an advisory for people who have court proceedings scheduled tomorrow or on other furlough days in District Courts, for such things as misdemeanor crimes, restraining orders, traffic cases and small-claims proceedings.

At Honolulu District Court Downtown, attorneys of record in criminal cases will be notified by the court of rescheduled proceedings and the attorneys are responsible for notifying their clients of the changes.

In criminal cases in which there is no attorney of record, the parties will be notified of schedule changes by mail.

Parties involved in civil, traffic and temporary restraining order cases will also be notified by mail of scheduling changes in their cases, said Judiciary spokeswoman Marsha Kitagawa.

If rescheduling notices are not received two days before a Honolulu District Court furlough Friday date, lawyers and parties should call 538-5500 for traffic cases, 538-5100 for criminal cases, and 538-5629 for civil cases during business hours, Kitagawa said.

At Ewa District Court, civil cases will be rescheduled and court staff will notify the parties by mail.

Effective today, all Ewa civil matters will be heard on Thursdays unless parties are notified otherwise, Kitagawa said. Questions should be directed to 538-5629 during business hours, he said.

At Käneohe and Waianae District Courts, traffic and criminal cases will be rescheduled and attorneys of record will be notified of the changes. If there is no attorney of record, parties will be notified by mail. If no notice is received within two days of a scheduled furlough Friday court date, Käneohe inquiries should be made to 534-6300 and Waianae inquiries to 954-8575.

At Wahiawä District Court, traffic, criminal and civil case schedules won't be affected by the furloughs.

There are also parking issues to be dealt with at Honolulu Circuit and Family Courts. Because the furlough schedules set by the judicial and executive branches don't always match up, there will be some Fridays when courts are open but state parking lots are closed.

Those Fridays this year are Nov. 27, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. Next year, they are Jan. 15 and Feb. 12.

Courthouse visitors on those days must park on the street or at privately operated lots.

Other information, including a schedule of all furlough days, can be found at the Judiciary's Web site, www.courts.state.hi.us.
