Junior teams from Hawai'i and Japan will face off this weekend at Waikoloa's Kings' Course in the third annual USA Hawai'i-Japan Junior Cup. Japan won the inaugural Ryder Cup-style competition in 2007 and Hawai'i captured last year's title.

The Hawai'i team has golfers from three islands and an under-age "ringer." Allisen Corpuz, 11, is on the 22-player team. She became the youngest Hawai'i State Women's Match Play champion this summer, winning the major before she started sixth grade at Punahou. She is also a three-time U.S. Kids champion.

The Cup is for juniors between the ages of 13 and 18. Its theme is "Juniors Joining Nations." Players are picked based on performance at qualifying junior tournaments. The event is a fundraiser for the HSJGA and Waikoloa Foundation.

Corpuz's teammates are Nainoa Calip, Ciera Min and Nani Yanagi from the Big Island; Lorens Chan, Eimi Koga, Corey Kozuma, Ryan Kuroiwa, Brian Lee, Bradley Shigezawa, Scotty Yamashita, Tommy Yamashita, Alina Ching, Justin Chu, Hee Sue Condry, Bou-An Fujieki and Alice Kim from O'ahu; and Cassy Isagawa, Justin Keiley, Alex Chiarella, Aaron Kunitomo and Kyung Kim from Maui. Kim, who moved to Arizona a few years ago, is a sponsor's exemption along with Scotty Yamashita.

Four of Japan's golfers are playing for the second time, while eight from Hawai'i (Kim, Ching, Fujieki, Shigezawa, Lee, Isagawa, Kozuma and Keiley) are attempting to defend the title they helped win last year.

The Cup is presented by the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association and the Japan High School Golf Association, and sponsored by Hilton Grand Vacations. It starts with a Junior-Am sponsored by Dick Pacific Construction today. Competition begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. with four-ball matches. The Saturday format is foursomes, also starting at 9:30 a.m. Sunday's final day features 22 singles matches from 7 a.m.

Volunteers are needed. Call Johnny Eusebio at Waikoloa Kings' (808-886-7888).

ISHII FINISHES 11TH AT JAPAN SR. OPEN

Hawai'i Golf Hall of Famer David Ishii tied for 11th at last weekend's 19th Japan Senior Open. It was played at Biwako Country Club. Ishii shot rounds of 75-73-67-77 and finished at 4-over-par 292.

He was 12 shots behind champion Tsukasa Watanabe (73—280). Turtle Bay's Kiyoshi Murota (71—281) was runner-up a third straight year.

Ishii won a little more than $13,000.
