Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus fundraiser celebrates queen

Advertiser Staff

Queen Liliu'okalani lived at Washington Place for more than half a century and as one of Hawai'i’s most gifted composers, she filled its halls with music. Hear her songs come alive again as Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus celebrates her musical legacy at Kupu A'e 2009, its annual fundraising gala 5:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Washington Place.

“An Evening with the Queen” features entertainment by HYOC ensembles, the Galliard String Quartet and Marlene Sai. The evening also honors the contributions of Barbara Smith, professor emeritus of music at the University of Hawai'i-Mänoa.
Cost is $150 per person; sponsor level tables are available and seating is limited. Proceeds from the event go toward general operations and scholarships for HYOC, Hawai'i’s longest running children’s choir, serving over 200 students weekly in grades kindergarten through 12. Details: 521-2982 or www.hyoc.org.
