A water main break on Ala Wai Boulevard caused an all-day disruption to traffic and water service in Waikíkí yesterday, and officials said repairs were expected to continue into today.

The break was reported at 3:44 a.m. at Ala Wai near Keoniana Street. Residents in about a half-dozen low-rise apartment buildings had no water service, and had to haul water in buckets from a water wagon or spigots on the street.

Police detoured traffic onto Nämähana Street.

A gas line also was damaged, the Board of Water Supply said.

A water wagon was set up at 439 Keoniana St. Also, officials rigged faucets on fire hydrants near the corners of Kuamoo Street and Ala Wai, and Pau Street and Ala Wai.

Officials said the break is in an area where a 16-inch line connects with an 8-inch line.
