Hawaii leads Japan in Junior Cup golf event, 12-10

Hawai'i, which earned a point because of a forfeit before play began yesterday, then won six of 10 matches to take the lead after the second round of the USA Hawai'i-Japan Junior Cup at Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings' Course.

Hawai'i now leads the Ryder Cup-style tournament, 12-10, entering today's final round.

Bradley Shigezawa and Cassy Isagawa posted Hawai'i's largest victory margin of yesterday's foursomes match play with a 5-and-4 win.

A total of 22 points will be available in today's singles match play.

SURFING

COCO HO ADVANCES

Coco Ho of Sunset Beach advanced to the quarterfinals of the Movistar Peru Classic women's surfing contest yesterday.

The second and third rounds were run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Lobitos, Piura, Peru.

Ho received a bye in the second round, then defeated Kaua'i's Alana Blanchard in the third round, 14.5-10.5. Ho is currently ranked No. 3 on the ASP Women's World Tour and still has an outside shot at the 2009 world title.

No. 1-ranked Stephanie Gilmore of Australia and No. 2 Silvana Lima of Brazil also advanced yesterday.

Ho is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining for the final day of competition in the Peru contest. Hawai'i surfers Blanchard, Megan Abubo and Melanie Bartels were eliminated in the third round.

CROSS COUNTRY

BYUH 9TH, 10TH

Brigham Young-Hawai'i finished ninth in the women's division and 10th in the men's yesterday at the NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships in San Francisco.

Hawai'i Pacific finished 12th in the men's division and 15th in the women's, and Hawai'i-Hilo was 15th in the men's and 21st in the women's.

Chico State won the men's division and Alaska Anchorage the women's.

Hawai'i's top individual finishers were HPU's Dany Malley, 34th in the men's 10K in 32 minutes, 56.3 seconds, and BYUH's Danielle Anderson , 44th in the women's 6K in 23:03.8.

SOCCER

BYUH BEATS HPU

Margaret Sekona, Natasha Aiono and Nicole Slater scored goals as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat host Hawai'i Pacific, 3-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match.

Becky Ploeger made seven saves for the Seasiders (15-3, 12-2). Kaua Wall scored for the Sea Warriors (10-8-1, 8-6).

• Kimo Komomua scored in the 102nd minute as host HPU (12-2-2, 9-2-2) beat BYUH (8-8-1, 7-5-1) in a men's match. HPU's Chance Bukoski and BYUH's Adam Maciejewski also scored goals.

• Omar Garcia and Luis Segovia each scored two goals as host Hawai'i-Hilo (10-10, 9-5) beat Chaminade (3-14, 2-12), 6-2, in a men's match. Dylan Taschner and Charles Thompson scored for Chaminade.

• Kelly White scored two goals as Hilo (4-12-4, 3-8-3) beat Chaminade (0-17, 0-14), 3-0, in a women's match. Marissa Minor made 15 saves for Chaminade.

VOLLEYBALL

UHH BEATS HPU

Josimara Pinheiro had 15 kills and 20 digs as 17th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo beat visiting Hawai'i Pacific, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match.

Hillary Hurley added 16 kills and Katie Swenson 48 assists for the Vulcans, who improved to 25-1 and finished 15-1 in the PacWest.

Julia Gruszecka, Kelly Balanay and Mariana Souza each had eight kills for the Sea Warriors (2-11 and 9-5).
