Culinarians honored with scholarship funds

Advertiser Staff

Meng-Ling Erik Kuo is the winner of this year's Tom and Warren Matsuda Scholarship Culinary Competition, held Sunday at the Sub-Zero-Wolf showroom in Honolulu.

Kuo will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the opportunity to assist celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi in a food event on the Mainland.
Second-place winner was Tate Nakano-Edwards and third place was Rena Suzuki, both Kapi'olani Community College students and both members of the national award-winning American Culinary Federation student team competition earlier this year.
The competition, during which the culinarians each prepared different full menus, was judged by Yamaguchi and chefs Hiroshi Fukui, Alan Wong and Jackie Lau.
The finalists were chosen on the basis of recipes, photos of the meals they planned to prepare, a personal essay and letters of recommendation.
