Police investigate suspected sexual assault of 3-year-old

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police were investigating a report that a 3-year-old girl may have been sexually abused by an adult at her Liliha area home.

The toddler told her legal guardian that she was feeling sore in her vaginal area from a 36-year-old man touching her on Thursday between the hours of 4:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., police said.

Police are investigating the case as suspected first-degree sexual assault .

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona Jr. has ordered the state flag be flown at half-staff through sunset tomorrow at all state and county buildings in honor of the 13 men and women who lost their lives at Fort Hood, Texas, Thursday in a mass shooting.

"We must always honor our service men and women, who risk their lives every day to protect the liberty and freedom we have as American citizens," Aiona said in a statement. "This senseless act of violence saddens us all, and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victims."

Residents also are encouraged to fly their own state flags at half-staff in honor of all those who lost their lives.

Honolulu fire investigators yesterday found several potential causes of an early morning fire where 10 people lived but could not pinpoint one source.

The 1 a.m. fire at 1277 Kípaipai St. damaged the townhome and caused an estimated $50,000 damage to the building and $3,000 to the contents, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

After spending the day at the house, fire investigators found several potential causes but could not narrow it down to just one cause, Kealoha said.

The damage was mainly limited to an upstairs bedroom.

When firefighters arrived, two male occupants were dousing the flames using water from inside the home and with a garden hose from outside.

Both men were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by Emergency Medical Services personnel. The men refused to be taken to an emergency room for further assessment, Kealoha said.

Ten people live in the home — seven adults and three children, he said. Two of the children were not at home when the fire started.

Neighbors smelled smoke and woke up the residents before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, ventilated the home and checked for any further fire in the ceiling of the building.

Some smoke detectors were present in the townhome, firefighters said.

A 21-year-old man was in serious condition yesterday after he was stabbed in Waikíkí by an unknown assailant who attempted to rob him, authorities said.

Emergency Medical Service personnel took the man to a trauma hospital after the 4:30 a.m. incident on Kaiulani Avenue, said Bryan Cheplic, Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Police said the man was found seated at a table in a Burger King restaurant bleeding after being confronted by an unknown man who stabbed him.

The stabbing occurred a few blocks away, police said. The assailant was last seen on foot headed toward Kapili Street.

TONIGHT IS FINAL HEARING ON PROPOSED HIGHER PARK FEES

Planned increases in state park and boating fees are being opposed by many Hawaii residents who have spoken at public hearings held across the Islands.

The money would be used to repair and maintain Hawaii's aging outdoor recreational facilities, but residents and some businesses are complaining about new tourist entry fees and boat mooring rate increases. The final public hearing is scheduled for 6 tonight at the Jefferson Elementary School cafeteria.
