Col. James Bierman assumed command of the 3rd Marine Regiment yesterday at a change-of-command ceremony at Dewey Square, Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.

Bierman succeeds Col. Duffy White, who commanded the regiment for the past two years.

White has been assigned to the U.S. military delegation to NATO in Mons, Belgium, where he will be a land planner.

Under White's command, the 3rd Marines deployed as a whole for the first time since the Gulf War of 1990-91. The unit returned home Nov. 1 after a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan.

Bierman assumed command in July 2005 of the 3rd Marines' 1st Battalion, and deployed with the battalion to Iraq in 2007.
