City Council panel asks for delay in police chief selection

The City Council Public Safety Committee is calling for the Honolulu Police Commission to delay picking a police chief until its members can hear from commission chairwoman Christine Camp about the controversy over the selection process.

The committee, through Committee Chairman Donovan Dela Cruz, also is drafing separate resolutions expressing “no confidence” in Camp and calling for creation of an investigative committee to look at the commission’s selection process.
Camp, in a letter to Dela Cruz last Thursday, said she would appear before his committee on behalf of the commission. But in the email, Camp also pointed out that the commission is interviewing the six remaining candidates today and tomorrow and asked that the meeting be postponed until later this week.
Dela Cruz said the meeting date couldn’t be changed because the date, time and agenda had already been posted. Dela Cruz recessed the meeting for half an hour hoping Camp would come. She did not, and discussions began about what actions the committee should take to express its displeasure.
Camp said last Friday that she anticipates a chief will be announced at Wednesday's commission meeting.
