Advertiser Staff

U.S. Sens. Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel K. Akaka will host an event to honor and celebrate the life of Saint Damien de Veuster Thursday in the U.S. Capitol.

Honored guests will include Catholic Bishop Clarence “Larry” Silva of Honolulu, Belgian Ambassador to the United States Jan Matthysen, Papal Ambassador to the United States Archbishop Pietro Sambi and members of Congress.

The event is from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Senate Committee on Appropriations Hearing Room in the U.S. Capitol (S-127).

Following the event, a small group will conduct a lei draping ceremony at Saint Damien’s statue in the Capitol.

On Oct. 11, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Father Damien de Veuster, SS.CC., of Molokai to sainthood.
