Panelists no match for retiree

 • Pigskin picks

Charles Daitoku's goal each week is not necessarily to win, but to beat the Pigskin Picks panel.

"(The) challenge for me is only to get more than the pickers. You don't anticipate winning this," said Daitoku, 67, who is retired and lives in Wahiawä.

Well, he did both.

His 14-1 record and tiebreaker result was enough for Daitoku to win a trip for two to Las Vegas and $100 worth of free pizza from Papa John's.

The best record by our panelists came from the KGMB team of Liz Chun and Mike Cherry, who had a 9-6 record. Everyone else was 8-7 in a week filled with upsets.

Daitoku, who said he's played Pigskin Picks "from the beginning," said he doesn't employ any strategy. "(I) came close before. Can't believe how hard it is (to win)."

He did pick such upsets as Stanford over USC, Carolina over Atlanta, Jacksonville over the New York Jets, Washington over Denver, Kansas City over Oakland, and Green Bay over Dallas.

"Green Bay's my team," he said.

Regarding picking Stanford over USC, he said, "I didn't think USC is so hot. I don't like (USC coach) Pete Carroll since he got rid of Norm Chow."

Although he got all his college predictions correct and was perfect with his morning NFL selections, Daitoku didn't tune in to the afternoon NFL games.

"(I) watched Michelle Wie," he said. "I was just hoping she would win."
