No. 1 Kansas holds on, 57-55

ST. LOUIS — Cole Aldrich had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, helping top-ranked Kansas overcome a sloppy night to hold off Memphis, 57-55, last night in a rematch of the 2008 national championship game.

Memphis (1-1) trailed 56-55 after Elliot Williams' long 3 with 16.7 seconds left. Sherron Collins hit 1 of 2 free throws to give Kansas (2-0) a 57-55 lead before Williams missed a contested 3-pointer.

No. 2 Michigan State 75, Gonzaga 71: Durrell Summers hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:02 left, made two free throws with 5.7 seconds to go and finished with 21 points in helping the host Spartans (2-0) rally past the Bulldogs (1-1).

No. 9 Duke 101, Charlotte 59: Nolan Smith scored 24 points, Jon Scheyer added 20 and the host Blue Devils (3-0) raced to a 14-2 lead and were never in danger in routing the 49ers (2-1) in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

No. 10 Tennessee 124, UNC Asheville 49: Scotty Hopson had 25 points, Bruce Pearl earned his 100th victory with the host Volunteers (2-0) and the 124 points broke the single-game school record of 121 points in an easy victory over the Bulldogs (0-2).

WOMEN'S TOP 10

NO. 1 CONNECTICUT 83, NO. 10 TEXAS 58: Maya Moore had 20 points and 11 rebounds as the defending champion Huskies (2-0) never trailed in opening up a 48-27 halftime lead to cruise past the Longhorns (2-1).

No. 3 Ohio State 88, Alabama-Birmingham 55: Jantel Lavender scored 21 of her 30 points in the first half and the host Buckeyes ended the first half with a 24-7 run to open up a 43-24 lead in rolling past the Blazers (1-1).

No. 6 Tennessee 91, Texas Tech 53: Taber Spani scored 18 points and the Lady Vols (2-0) opened the second half with a 32-4 run for a 64-21 lead in cruising past the Lady Raiders (1-1) at San Antonio.

No. 8 Baylor 100, Tennessee Tech 55: Freshman Brittney Griner had 10 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks and missed her only dunk attempt as the host Lady Bears (1-1) overwhelmed the Golden Eagles (1-2).

Fresno State 65, Northern Arizona 59: Sylvester Seay scored 22 points and Paul George added 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs (2-0) held off the Lumberjacks (1-2) in the West Coast Classic at Flagstaff, Ariz.

New Mexico 97, New Mexico State 87: Phillip McDonald scored 27 points and the visiting Lobos (2-0) held off the Aggies (0-2), who trailed 52-36 at halftime, but rallied to take a 68-67 lead with 10:30 to play before falling back.

SMALL COLLEGE

ALASKA-ANCHORAGE 82, HAWAI'I PACIFIC 66 (men): Malcolm Campbell scored 16 points, Nick Pacitti hit the go-ahead jumper and the Seawolves (1-0) finished with a 25-11 run to rally past the Sea Warriors (0-1) at MPI gym.

ALASKA-FAIRBANKS 66, UH-HILO 65 (women): Jessica Harrison and Lakeshia Levi each scored 18 points as the host Nanooks (1-0) held off the Vulcans (0-3), who got 15 points from Kayce Kirihara.
