Advertiser Staff

A 22-year-old Honoka'a woman died of injuries she sustained in a two-vehicle crash yesterday morning on Hawai'i Belt Road, 300 feet west of the 52-mile marker in the Hämäkua District.

Police identified the victim as Keshia A. Fernandez.

Police said Fernandez was driving west in a 1998 Honda four-door sedan when the car crossed the center line and hit an oncoming 2002 Ford multi-purpose vehicle about 7:30 a.m.

Fernandez was taken to North Hawai'i Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:22 a.m.

She had been wearing a seat belt, police said.

The driver of the Ford, a 34-year-old woman from Waimea, three boys ages 14, 4 and 2, and a 13-year-old girl were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police ask anyone who may have seen the crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, ext. 229.

It was the 21st traffic fatality on Big Island this year, compared with 24 at this time last year.
