Kalaniana'ole Highway work will mostly be done at night

The state Department of Transportation last night changed construction hours for the upcoming Kalaniana'ole Highway retaining wall project following a community meeting.

Prompted by community feedback, the department has eliminated scheduled daytime lane closures and will "focus the majority of work during (the) night," DOT said in a news release.

The previously announced schedule called for one lane of the highway to be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

At night, all lanes will be closed from 8:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, the DOT said.

Night work will remain Sundays through Thursdays, but times of the closures have not yet been determined, the DOT said.

The project is scheduled to begin the week of Nov. 29, shut down for the holidays and resume in January. It is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2010, with road closures completed by August 2010.

The $7.8 million project consists of various safety improvements including construction of a rockfall impact barrier, rehabilitation of an existing retaining wall, slope stabilization, pavement reconstruction and installation of electrical cables and conduits.
