LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fourth-ranked Kentucky roared past Rider, 92-63, yesterday in the Cancun Challenge, hardly looking like the club its coach John Calipari called the "worst" defensive team he's seen in 20 years following narrow escapes against Miami (Ohio) and Sam Houston State this week.

The Wildcats (4-0) held Rider to 31 percent shooting — including just 4-of-17 3-pointers — and added 10 steals and 10 blocks in easily their most complete game of the season.

"There has to be a sense of urgency defensively, we had that today," Calipari said.

Freshman John Wall had 21 points and 11 assists, and Patrick Patterson added 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Ryan Thompson led Rider (2-2) with 16 points.

"Everybody played big," Wall said. "I smiled more than I usually do because we were having a great time and we were playing defense. We have to do this every game."

No. 9 Duke 104, Radford 67: Freshman Andre Dawkins scored a season-high 20 points and the host Blue Devils (4-0) matched a school record with 18 3-pointers in a romp against the Highlanders (2-1). Duke overwhelmed Radford during a first half in which they shot 50 percent and matched the school record with 13 3s in a half.

No. 11 Butler 64, Evansville 60: Shelvin Mack scored 17 points and Gordon Hayward added 15, including a game-sealing free throw with 3.6 seconds left, to lift the Bulldogs (3-0) over the host Aces (2-1). Evansville's Colt Ryan scored 12 of his 17 points in the final minute to get the Aces within 62-60 with 16.8 seconds left. But Mack and Howard finished the game by each making 1 of 2 free throws.

Virginia Commonwealth 82, No. 17 Oklahoma 69: Jay Gavin scored 20 points, Larry Sanders 17 and the host Rams (2-1) never trailed in an upset of the Sooners (2-1). Leading by one early on, the Rams used a 20-8 spurt to take control of the game.

No. 19 Georgetown 63, Savannah State 44: Jason Clark scored a career-high 14 points and four Hoyas (3-0) were in double figures as Georgetown rolled to a victory against the host Tigers (2-2). Greg Monroe added 13 points for Georgetown, Austin Freeman had 12 and Chris Wright 11 in a game that gave the Hoyas a much-needed breather after they squeaked past Temple 46-45 on Tuesday.

No. 20 Louisville 69, East Tennessee State 56: Edgar Sosa scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half and the host Cardinals (2-0) beat the Buccaneers (1-3). Richardson scored 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to help the host Illini (3-0) overcome a sluggish start and beat the Blue Hose (0-3) in the Las Vegas Invitational.
