HONOLULU — A Maui man accused of selling military secrets to China has been found competent to stand trial.
U.S. Magistrate Kevin S.C. Chang says Noshir Gowadia’s personality may make him a difficult defendant. But Chang says Gowadia’s unwillingness to thoroughly consult with his lawyers does not equate with an inability to do so.
Chang filed his ruling Friday.
Chief U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway can accept or reject Chang’s recommendation.
Chang questioned the testimony of two expert defense witnesses. He said he was persuaded by the prosecution’s expert witness.
All three found Gowadia suffers from narcissistic personality disorder, but the prosecution argued he can still assist in his own defense.
