Traditional Kirkin' o' the Tartan service on Nov. 30

Advertiser Staff

The Cathedral of St. Andrew is hosting the traditional Kirkin o' the Tartan Scottish blessing and celebration on Nov. 30 to bless family tartans.

The tradition dates back to a time when wearing tartans was banned in Scotland, but once a year congregants would wear a concealed piece of their tartan to church, where the minister would bless them and ask for God's favor on the forbidden tradition.

St. Andrew's Cathedral at 229 Queen Emma Square continues the tradition, in part because its named after the patron saint of Scotland.

The 5:30 service is open to the public — tartan wearing or not — and will feature bagpipers and a lively reception. Call 524-2822 ext. 217 for more information.
