Mules eye return to title game

Leilehua is a win away from becoming the second team to reach the First Hawaiian Bank Division I state football championship for the third consecutive year when it takes on Kamehameha in one semifinal Friday at Aloha Stadium.

The Mules (9-3) ousted Maui champion Baldwin, 48-12, Friday in Wailuku to advance to the 7 p.m. semifinal with the Warriors (10-1).

In the 4 p.m. semifinal, Kahuku (11-0) will play Farrington (10-2), which eliminated Big Island champion Honoka'a, 48-16, Friday at Kealakehe High.

The Mules, who won the 2007 championship against Saint Louis, lost to Punahou in last year's title game.

The Red Raiders are the only team to reach the title game in three successive seasons (1999 to 2001), winning 2 of 3.

Top-seeded Kahuku and second-seeded Kamehameha had first-round byes.

The Warriors and Mules are familiar in big games. Kamehameha beat Leilehua, 28-7, for the 2004 Division I state title. Kamehameha also beat Leilehua, 20-19, in the 1974 Oahu Prep Bowl at Honolulu Stadium.

Kamehameha leads the series, 8-1; three of those wins came in 1936 to 1938, when the Mules played in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Kahuku and Farrington are very familiar foes, as both are from the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East. The Red Raiders beat the Governors, 16-14, during the regular season. Kahuku, which owns a 30-14 lead in the series, has won the last 11 meetings.

The Division II semifinals continue Friday with top-seeded 'Iolani (10-2) playing 'Aiea (9-3), 7 p.m., at Radford.

Nä Ali'i advanced by ousting Maui champion Lahainaluna, 20-12, Friday at 'Aiea.

'Iolani has won three of the last four Division II titles. 'Aiea won the inaugural Division II state title in 2003. The game pits the two winningest active coaches on O'ahu in 'Iolani's Wendell Look (133-90-3) and 'Aiea's Wendell Say (100-78-1).

The teams have only met once before, a 1964 nonleague game won by 'Aiea, 21-2.

In the other Division II semifinal, Hawai'i Prep will once again travel to another island — playing Kaua'i, 7 p.m., Friday at Vidinha Stadium in Líhu'e.

Ka Makani (11-0) advanced with a 17-14 win over OIA White champion and host Moanalua Friday.

Kaua'i (9-0) and 'Iolani drew first-round byes.

The winner of the Hawai'i Prep-Kaua'i matchup means a Neighbor Island team will reach the final for the third time in the last four years.

Ka Makani leads the series, 4-2, all in nonleague play.
