Judge James Shigemura

James Y. Shigemura, a retired District Court judge and state legislator, died Nov. 18 in Hilo. He was 92.

Shigemura was born in Honolulu and graduated from McKinley High School and the University of Hawai'i. He received his law degree from Georgetown University.

Shigemura returned to the Islands and worked for the city prosecutor's office and the state attorney general's office. He would later be elected to the state House, where he served six terms representing Mänoa and Waikíkí.

In addition to the Legislature, Shigemura also served on the Honolulu City Council and was later appointed as a district judge in Honolulu.

Shigemura is survived by son, John; daughter, Lia; a grandson; and sisters, Muriel Omiya and Amy Murai.

Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Harris United Methodist Church in Honolulu; service at 11 a.m.
