KAILUA, KONA — A bum left ankle and scrappy Honoka'a defense were not nearly enough to stop Farrington tailback Harry Tuimaseve in last Friday's First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division I state tournament football game.

Tuimaseve, a 5-foot-11, 177-pound senior, actually was more productive after suffering the sprain with 1:35 left in the first half. He rushed for 139 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries in the second half to help the Governors (10-2) pull away from Honoka'a, 48-16, and advance to Friday's semifinal showdown with O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku (11-0).

Shortly after Tuimaseve was injured at the end of a 12-yard run late in the first half, he sat on a sideline bench with a big ice pack wrapped around his elevated, shoeless left foot.

"I got tackled on my ankle," said Tuimaseve, who had 100 yards and one TD on 12 carries by that point.

The Dragons, who fell behind 21-0 midway through the second quarter, closed to 21-9 on Sage Johnson's 45-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Morales with 33 seconds left.

So after Scotland Smith returned the second-half kickoff 39 yards to the Govs' 44, Tuimaseve trotted out with the offense and took his normal spot in the backfield.

"This is the state tournament," he said. "I had to suck it up and pull one out for the team."

On Tuimaseve's first carry of the second half, he darted 11 yards on second-and-7 for a first down. Two plays later, he scampered 23 yards down the left sideline to the Honoka'a 7, setting up Jared Hakuole's TD pass to Alvin Fa'amausili to help Farrington stretch the lead to 28-9.

Then in the fourth quarter, after the Dragons had cut it to 28-16, Tuimaseve helped the Governors capitalize on Seth Ilae's fumble recovery by sprinting to an 11-yard touchdown run toward the left side. A two-point conversion pass from Hakuole to Siaosi Feleunga made it 36-16 with 4:36 remaining.

Tuimaseve finished with 239 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.

"He was awesome," Honoka'a coach Fred Lau said. "We haven't seen anybody like that on the Big Island."

Tuimaseve credited his coaches and offensive line, which suffered a big loss when starting left tackle Joseph Siliga was ejected early in the third quarter. Laimana Kapuwai "did a great job stepping in" for Siliga, Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.

The other linemen were right tackle Justin Momosea, right guard Gino Tagoilelagi, left guard Larry Godinez, center Lindon Kahana and tight end Sammy Park.

"The coaching staff did a good job mixing it up," Tuimaseve said, "and we've got playmakers on the line."
