Nishigata a winner, no joke

Advertiser Staff

'Ewa Beach's Clyde Nishigata, who's been playing Pigskin Picks "so long, I forget already," was cautious when he received a call from Billy V announcing that he was this week's winner.

"I was kind of shocked. Is this really Billy V or is this my friend impersonating Billy V?" Nishigata said. "My friend, Derek (Buendia), would do that."

Nishigata said only after he heard the recording of his interview with Billy V on KINE did he feel it wasn't a prank.

The 50-year-old Pearl City High graduate, who correctly picked 14 of 15 games and won the tiebreaker, earns a trip for two to Las Vegas and $100 worth of pizza from Papa John's.

When asked about his strategy, Nishigata joked: "First, ini mini miny mo."

Nishigata, who submitted seven entries, is actually more knowledgeable then he admits.

He picked such upsets as Oakland over Cincinnati, Cal over Stanford and UConn over Notre Dame.

"I thought Oakland was going to win at home," he said. (For UConn) I just think they're a stronger team than Notre Dame and Notre Dame is up and down."

When asked about Cal over Stanford, Nishigata said, "That one, I went ini mini miny mo."

Nishigata's only mistake? Picking San Jose State over Hawai'i. UH won in overtime, 17-10.

"I wanted Hawai'i to win, but I thought San Jose State would give them a good rub," he said. "I thought (quarterback Bryant) Moniz wasn't going to play (he didn't) and (receiver Greg) Salas, too."
