Mother attacked, threatened with rape while waiting for son on Maui

Advertiser Staff

A mother waiting for her son to finish an exercise class at War Memorial Baseball Fields was attacked by a man with a knife who threatened to rape her Sunday night, Maui police said Tuesday.

The woman was waiting for her son’s class to finish around 7:30 p.m. when she went to use the bathroom, located between the tennis courts and the baseball fields. An unknown man grabbed her and threatened her with a knife that he was going to rape her, police said.
The woman grabbed the man’s hand and believes she broke one of his fingers on his right hand as she broke free, police said.
The woman suffered minor injuries.
The suspect was described as approximately 5-foot, 8-inches tall and “really smelly,” according to police. He was slightly unshaven and wore a long-sleeve, black shirt and jeans. He had a 2-inch tattoo of a cross on his left hand.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Clyde Holokai at (808) 270-6518 or the Maui Police Department’s Central Dispatch at (808) 244-6400.
