Accused spy Noshir Gowadia is mentally fit to stand trial, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang made the ruling Friday, saying he agreed with the findings of a government psychologist.

Gowadia is a former government aerospace engineer accused of selling military secrets to China.

Two defense psychologists testified in a hearing last week that they believe Gowadia's mental problems made him unfit for trial.

But Chang said he placed more credence in the government expert, Dr. Lisa Hope, who found Gowadia to be suffering from "narcissistic personality disorder" but still capable of understanding and assisting in his legal defense.

The defense experts' findings were "outweighed by the compelling evidence presented by Dr. Hope," Chang ruled.

Chang also said that since 2006, he has had numerous opportunities to observe Gowadia interacting in court with his lawyers.

"It appears, and the parties agree," that (Gowadia) is a difficult and challenging client," Chang said. "The court concludes that defendant has sufficient mental capacity to stand trial."
