No. 8 West Virginia romps

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Casey Mitchell scored a career-high 18 points and No. 8 West Virginia routed Long Beach State, 85-62, yesterday in the first round of the 76 Classic.

The Mountaineers (3-0) led the entire game in the first meeting ever between the two schools. West Virginia will play Texas A&M in one of today's semifinals.

Greg Plater and Stephan Gilling each had 14 points for Long Beach State (3-2), which was trying for its first win against a ranked team since 1994.

NO. 15 MICHIGAN 83, CREIGHTON 76

Manny Harris scored 20 points, including a three-point play and a dunk for a 76-73 lead with three minutes left in overtime, leading the Wolverines (3-0) over the Blue Jays (2-2) in the Old Spice Classic at Orlando, Fla.

TEXAS A&M 69, NO. 19 CLEMSON 60

B.J. Holmes scored 20 points and the Aggies (4-0) saw their 17-point lead early in the second half dwindle to 58-56 before pulling away to upset the Tigers (4-1) in the first round of the 76 Classic at Anaheim, Calif.

Damian Johnson had 18 points and the Golden Gophers (4-0) hit five 3-pointers in the final 8 minutes to hold off the Bulldogs in the first round of the 76 Classic at Anaheim, Calif.

HOUSTON 100, NO. 25 OKLAHOMA 93

Kelvin Lewis scored 28 points, Aubrey Coleman added 27 and the Cougars (2-1) rallied from an 18-point, first-half deficit to hand the Sooners (2-3) their third straight loss in the second day of pool play at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage.

Senior guard Jonathan Gibson scored a career-high 31 points and host New Mexico State (2-3) took a 40-24 halftime lead in beating North Carolina A&T.

Freshman Skyler Diggins scored 21 points and Brittany Mallory made three of four free throws in the final 20 seconds as the Irish (4-0) held off the Aztecs (3-1) in the Paradise Jam at St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. It was coach Muffet McGraw's 500th victory at the school and 588th overall.

Amber Harris had 22 points and nine rebounds, and made two free throws for a 74-71 lead with 20 seconds left to help the Musketeers (4-0) turn back the Jayhawks (3-1) in the Junkanoo Jam at Freeport, Bahamas.

NO. 10 DUKE 70, WESTERN KENTUCKY 47

Jasmine Thomas scored 20 points and the Blue Devils (4-1) opened the second half with a 14-3 run for a 42-24 lead and never looked back in beating the Lady Toppers (3-1) in the Caribbean Challenge at Cancun, Mexico.
