West Virginia tops Pittsburgh in 'Brawl', 19-16

Associated Press

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The outcome of the Backyard Brawl was in the hands — or more specifically on the foot — of a redshirt freshman and Tyler Bitancurt wasn't about to mess up his perfect night.

Bitancurt kicked his fourth field goal, a 43-yarder, as time expired to lift West Virginia to a 19-16 win over No. 8 Pittsburgh last night.

Noel Devine rushed for 134 yards and a score as West Virginia (8-3, 4-2 Big East) halted Pittsburgh's five-game winning streak.

Pittsburgh (9-2, 5-1) can still earn the conference's Bowl Championship Series berth with a win at home next week against No. 5 Cincinnati.

"Trust me, we'll turn the page on this one in a hurry and get ready for Cincinnati," Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt said.

Pittsburgh's Bill Stull found Jonathan Baldwin with a 50-yard TD toss with 2:54 left to tie the score at 16-16.

That gave Jarrett Brown enough time to move West Virginia 42 yards into position for the winning kick. Pittsburgh called a timeout to try to ice Bitancurt.

"I didn't say a word to Tyler Bitancurt," West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said. "I looked at everybody but him."

NO. 2 ALABAMA 26, AUBURN 21

No. 2 Alabama found its championship form in the nick of time. Greg McElroy's 4-yard touchdown pass to Roy Upchurch with 1:24 left helped Alabama (12-0, 8-0 Southeastern Conference) complete a second straight perfect regular season in the Iron Bowl. Auburn (7-5, 3-5) pushed the ball to the Alabama 37 on the final drive, but Chris Todd's pass to the end zone was batted down by the Tide defense.

NO. 5 CINCINNATI 49, ILLINOIS 36

Tony Pike returned from an injury to his non-throwing arm and had a record day, passing for six touchdowns for host Cincinnati (11-0) in a victory over Illinois (3-8). The senior quarterback started for the first time since Oct. 15 and broke the school record for touchdown passes. Two of them went to Mardy Gilyard, who also ran back a kickoff for a score.

OTHERS

NEBRASKA 28, COLORADO 20

Nebraska (9-3, 6-2 Big 12) struggled on offense but thanks to touchdowns on a punt return and an interception, the Cornhuskers held off Colorado (3-9, 2-6). Niles Paul's 59-yard punt return put Nebraska ahead 7-0, and Matt O'Hanlon's 30-yard interception return gave Nebraska a 21-7 lead heading into halftime.

RUTGERS 34, LOUISVILLE 14

Mohamed Sanu ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns to lead visiting Rutgers (8-3, 3-3 Big East) past Louisville (4-8, 1-6). Joe Martinek added 90 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Tom Savage threw for a score and ran for another for the Scarlet Knights.

TULSA 33, MEMPHIS 30

G.J. Kinne tossed a game-tying, 2-yard touchdown pass to Trae Johnson with 30 seconds left and Kevin Fitzpatrick's fourth field goal was the game-winner in overtime as host Tulsa (5-7, 3-5 Conference USA) beat Memphis in coach Tommy West's last game for Memphis (2-10, 1-7).
