The impressive surfing run of Joel Centeio continued yesterday.

Centeio advanced to the third round of the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing with yet another heat victory.

Eight heats of the second round were completed yesterday in wave-face heights of 8 to 12 feet at Sunset Beach. The competition was postponed at mid-day when conditions started deteriorating.

Centeio, who resides in Hale'iwa, is the leader in the chase for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing championship. He won the first event in the series, the Reef Hawaiian Pro, at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach last week.

The World Cup of Surfing is the second event in the Triple Crown series.

Centeio has maintained his momentum at Sunset Beach, advancing through the first two rounds. He was one of the standouts during yesterday's abbreviated session.

Centeio's two best waves received scores of 7.0 and 6.83, and his total score of 13.83 was tops among the Hawai'i surfers who competed yesterday.

Because he is an unseeded surfer, Centeio has to surf from the first round of the contests. The top-ranked surfers are seeded into the second and third rounds.

Dating to the start of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, Centeio has won nine consecutive heats in the Triple Crown series.

Also advancing through the second round yesterday was Kaua'i's Andy Irons. He took a sabbatical from the world tour in 2009, but is making his return to competitive surfing at this year's Triple Crown. Irons is a four-time former Triple Crown champion.

Other Hawai'i surfers advancing yesterday were Kekoa Bacalso and Torrey Meister.

The best heat of the day went to South Africa's Damien Fahrenfort. He had wave scores of 8.77 and 7.5 for a total of 16.27.

The World Cup of Surfing still requires three days of competition to determine a champion. The contest could resume today, if conditions are favorable.
