Sewage spills into basin near Queen's Medical Center

Advertiser Staff

County and state officials responded to a sewage spill yesterday near The Queen's Medical Center.

An estimated 1,500 gallons of untreated wastewater seeped out of a manhole at 550 S. Beretania St., in front of the hospital, the city Department of Environmental Services said.
About 1,450 gallons entered a storm drain at the intersection of Beretania and Lauhala streets, which empties into Honolulu Harbor. The cause of the spill was a blockage caused by rags in the 8-inch-diameter pipe, the city said.
The city received the call at 5 p.m. Crews secured the overflow at 6:15 p.m., and cleaned the area.
The state Department of Health's Clean Water Branch was notified of the spill.
The area was secured and signs will be posted. The basin drains into Honolulu Harbor, which is not a recreational waterway. The state advises the public to stay out of the area.
