It's a common phrase, "Say it with roses," but the Honolulu Orchid Society says, "Why Not Orchids!"

Seventy years ago, this elegant and exotic flower was only available to a select affluent few in Hawai'i. A quest to obtain and grow these beautiful flowers prompted 13 men of diverse interests to form the Honolulu Orchid Society.

From its humble beginnings, then the interruption caused by World War II, the society emerged as the leader in the development of the popularity of orchids and its organizations in Hawai'i.

Through the efforts of the Honolulu Orchid Society, orchids are available today in every color, shape and size. A multimillion-dollar industry has developed, and orchids are now affordable and available to everyone. Currently there are 19 orchid societies in Hawai'i, all spreading the knowledge of growing and enjoying orchids.

The Honolulu Orchid Society continues its legacy by celebrating with its 70th annual Orchid Show and Plant Sales. This year's show will be at a new location — the McKinley High School cafeteria Oct. 9 and 10.

Multiple landscaped displays will be done by various guest orchid societies and judged by the host society. In addition, 14 orchid vendors will fill the needs of people who want to take home some of these rare beauties. And folks who want to be successful in growing their new orchids will definitely want to attend the full slate of classes offered from some of the island's top experts.

The best thing about this event is the cost — there is none. The admission is free, the parking is free, even the classes are free. You'll save a few dollars and, just maybe, you'll buy some orchids to take home and enjoy. The club needs to make money somehow, right?

So let's help the Honolulu Orchid Society celebrate its 70th anniversary with "Why Not Orchids!" Visit www.honoluluorchidsociety.org for more information.
