St. Andrew's Cathedral offers Choral Evensong

A Choral Evensong featuring the music of Rheinberger, Noble and Mendelssohn will be sung by the church choir at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Andrew.

Evensong, sometimes called evening prayer, has been sung in cathedral churches for centuries, and offers prayer and song as thanks for the day past and blessing for the coming night.

The music will include Mendelssohn's "Hear My Prayer," which concludes with "O for the Wings of a Dove."

The service is free and open to the public. Calabash offerings will be accepted. 524-2822.

GAY GROUP ORGANIZES SOLIDARITY SUNDAY

Solidarity Sunday, a campaign to end violence (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) committed against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people," will be celebrated tomorrow by Dignity Honolulu, an organization of gay Catholics.

The eucharistic liturgy is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Kapahulu.

The homilist will be the Rev. Danette Poole.

Dignity has also scheduled a parish visitation during the 10:30 a.m. Mass tomorrow at the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace.

BOOK STUDY GROUP BEGINS AT EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL

In anticipation of a visit in late November by Phyllis Tickle, author of "The Great Emergence," Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Enchanted Lake will host a seven-week study group on her book.

The book deals with how Christianity is changing — especially in this 21st Century of rapid and endless change — and why.

The class on emergent Christianity and culture is scheduled 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning this week at the church.

KOREAN BUDDHIST RITUAL AT KENNEDY THEATRE

Ancient chants, drum and cymbal dances, and an elegantly costumed "Butterfly Dance" from the sacred Young San Ceremony will be offered in concert by Buddhist monks from Korea's Young San Preservation Group in "The Sound of Ecstasy and Nectar of Enlightenment: Buddhist Ritual Song and Dance."

The concert is presented by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Outreach College and The Korea Society, 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy Theatre.

Normally performed over the course of three days, the Young San Ceremony is an elaborate Korean Buddhist ritual, involving offerings of flowers, fragrances, music and sacred dance in honor of Buddha.

HAWAI'I KOREAN CHORUS PRESENTS 2 CONCERTS

The Moo Gung Hwa Korean Chorus of Hawaii will present two concerts:

    HALE'IWA CHURCH MARKS HARVEST FESTIVAL

    The Seventh Annual Harvest Festival of Lili'uokalani Church will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Hale'iwa church.

    Included will be entertainment by the Royal Hawaiian Band, Hawaiian plate lunch sales; keiki activities; drawings, antique car exhibit, arts and crafts and food vendors.

    INTERFAITH ALLIANCE TO HOLD AWARDS BANQUET

    The Interfaith Alliance Hawaii's seventh annual Celebration and Awards Banquet will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin on Pali Highway.

    Keynote speaker will be longtime University of Hawai'i law professor Jon Van Dyke, who will speak on "Civil Liberties in Times of Crisis."

    Also scheduled is presentation of the alliance's community awards, entertainment, including by Honpa Hongwanji's Dharma School Taiko (drum) Group, and a vegetarian buffet by Govinda's Food Service.

    'BREAK-AWAY' CHURCH WELCOMES GRAYSON

    Christ the Foundation Anglican Church — one of the "break-away" Episcopal churches that formed the new Anglican Province of North America — will host the Rev. John Grayson at three services in October.

    Grayson, co-rector of All Saints Anglican Church in North Carolina, will officiate at 8 a.m. services tomorrow and Oct. 18 at Windward Worship Center, 45-416 Kamehameha Highway, Kane'ohe.

    He will also be at 8 a.m. services Oct. 11 at Poha'i Nani Good Samaritan Retirement Center in Kane'ohe. A continental breakfast and informational meeting will follow.

    Invited are those interested in why an Anglican church, linked to the Anglican church in Rwanda, has been established in Hawai'i.
