'Iolani runs past Damien

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Ammon Baldomero rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries last night to help 'Iolani run past Damien, 35-6, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu football action at Aloha Stadium.

The Raiders — ranked No. 7 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the ILH.

The Monarchs fell to 1-6, 1-4.

Baldomero's first TD, from 14 yards out, and Andrew Skalman's extra point gave 'Iolani a 7-0 lead with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter. Cornerback Dylan Goto intercepted a Damien pass after the ensuing kickoff and returned it 32 yards to the Monarchs' 10, and Jarrett Arakawa completed a TD pass to Kevin Barayuga on the next play to help the Raiders go up, 14-0, just over a minute later.

Arakawa later connected with Trevyn Tulonghari on third-and-9 from the Damien 22. Tulonghari was stripped of the ball at the 1, but he recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Sklaman's PAT put 'Iolani up, 21-0, with 4:43 left in the half.

Tyler Tamayo intercepted an Arakawa pass on the Raiders' first second-half possession and returned it to the 'Iolani 21. Brenan Furtado later ran it in from three yards out to cut it to 21-6. The extra point attempt failed.

The Monarchs forced a punting situation on the next series, but were called for illegal participation, extending the Raiders' drive. 'Iolani capitalized five plays later on Baldomero's 1-yard TD run. Skalman's PAT made it 28-6 with 6:46 left in the third.
