Younger brother dies of injuries from Maui crash

A 17-year-old passenger involved in a fatal car crash Wednesday that killed his brother and another man died from his injuries yesterday, Maui police said.

Jared Kalamaku Kana of Waihe'e died at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

He was the brother of the driver of the 2004 Mazda sedan, Nailima Kana, 20, of Waihe'e, who died on the day of the crash.

The front seat passenger, Tyson Latham, 20, of Waihe'e, died at Maui Memorial Medical Center on Thursday.

Nailima Kana was driving north on Kahekili Highway near Wiliopohaku Street when he lost control, crossed the centerline, returned to the northbound lane and then hit an embankment, police said.

Jared Kana's death is the 17th traffic-related fatality this year in Maui County, compared with 14 at the same time last year.
