Power failures black out shopping center, residents

Advertiser Staff

Electrical service temporarily was disrupted yesterday to Windward Mall and to some 2,400 Kane'ohe residents after two unrelated outages, according to Hawaiian Electric Co.

An insulator that broke at 7:50 a.m. near the area around Wena and Hilinau streets knocked out service to 2,400 customers, said HECO spokeswoman Janet Crawford. Except for 200 customers around Puohala Elementary School, power was restored at 9:30 a.m., Crawford said. Service to the 200 remaining customers was restored at 11:47 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m., a suspected short circuit in an underground cable knocked out service to Windward Mall, Crawford said, although Macy's continued to operate on a backup generator.

For the next 90 minutes, HECO crews gradually restored service to mall businesses until everyone was back up at noon, Crawford said.
