NFL: Report indicates Michael Crabtree to meet with 49ers

San Jose Mercury News

Four games into the regular season, there are finally Michael Crabtree rumblings.
ESPN.com, citing multiple anonymous sources, reported that the former Texas Tech receiver traveled from Tampa to the Bay Area on Monday. Crabtree’s agent, Eugene Parker, was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, the Web site said.

The 49ers declined to comment on the story. But earlier in the day, coach Mike Singletary said the door remained open for Crabtree to play in 2009.
“Why say no to someone who may be one heck of a kid?” Singletary replied. “Like I said, I met him, I talked to him and I had a good feel for him. I haven’t been wrong too often.”
The No. 10 pick in the draft, Crabtree has reportedly spurned the 49ers’ five-year offer of $20 million, with $16 million guaranteed. Crabtree apparently wants money commensurate with a higher pick.
Time is running out on a deal. For Crabtree to play this season, league rules mandate that he must signed by Nov. 17. (The 49ers can trade his rights only after March 5, the start of the new NFL fiscal year.)
On the NFL Network, one of Crabtree’s advisers, Deion Sanders, delivered a subtle indication that talks could be heating up. It came as the network aired highlights of the 49ers-Rams game, when host Rich Eisen joked that the 49ers’ player catching a touchdown pass was Michael Crabtree.
“Not yet,” Sanders said. “He could be brewing. I’m dropping hints.”
Singletary’s reaction?
“I just hope he is right,” he said. “It would be great.”

49ers coach Singletary says no time for complacency
—Despite a 3-1 record and a 35-0 victory over St. Louis on Sunday, Singletary said the 49ers have work to do before they can consider themselves among the league’s elite. “I think we are a ways away,” he said.
One of the lingering concerns is the offensive line. The 49ers failed to establish the run against a weak Rams defense and Shaun Hill was sacked four times. Singletary indicated personnel changes could be in store. (”Hopefully not,” he added.)
Singletary planned to meet later in the week with offensive line coach Chris Foerster. Guards David Baas and Chilo Rachal, in particular, will be under review.
“I would just say that they did not play up to par,” Singletary said. “I know that whatever it is, we’ll just have to figure it out.”
Singletary indicated that Baas (ankle) might not have been 100 percent healthy.
—Quarterback Alex Smith was the only 49ers player not to participate in the Rams game. Singletary said he never even considered putting him in, despite the lopsided score. “I want Shaun to get all that he can right now because he needs it,” he said.
—In the locker room, players were still buzzing about linebacker Pat Willis’ all-around performance. Willis had 2.5 sacks, eight tackles and a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown.
“That’s one of the top performances I’ve ever seen from an inside linebacker,” said Takeo Spikes, a 12-year veteran. “Put it this way: It will be one of the most memorable games I’ve ever been associated with.”
—Returner Allen Rossum was on the game-day inactive list because Singletary wanted an extra linebacker on the roster. Ahmad Brooks got the call Sunday and had a tackle for a loss. Singletary said that Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson are asked to rush the quarterback so often that he wanted Brooks available to give Lawson and Haralson a breather.
—Running back Frank Gore (ankle/foot) and safety Reggie Smith (groin) were ruled out for Sunday’s game against Atlanta. Linebacker Marques Harris (hamstring) and linebacker Jeff Ulbrich (concussion) will be re-evaluated later in the week.
—The 49ers released receiver Dobson Collins.
