The city's push to restore beach parks on the Leeward Coast and move entrenched homeless populations resumes next month with the temporary closure of Ulehawa Beach Park from Lualualei Depot Road to the canal.

The closure, from 10 p.m. on Nov. 1 to 3 p.m. on Nov. 6, is part of a three-phase effort that will include the painting and repair of picnic tables and park benches, comprehensive landscape maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems and other infrastructure.

Once the first phase is completed, the park will be closed daily from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The overnight closure of the park comes in response to "numerous requests from community members," according to the city Department of Parks and Recreation.

The second and third phases of the project are expected to take place from February through April of next year.

The Nani Kai Beach and Surfer's Beach sections of the park were cleaned and improved in February.

Over the past two years, the department has undertaken several projects aimed at repairing and maintaining public parks in the Leeward area, including Nanakuli Beach Park and Ma'ili Beach Park.
