BYUH outlasts Dixie State in five

Losaline Faka'osi had 20 kills and 25 digs to help Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9 victory over Dixie State in Pacific West Conference women's volleyball last night at St. George, Utah.

BYUH improved to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in the PacWest. Dixie State, which handed conference leader Hawai'i-Hilo its first loss on Saturday, is 11-5 and 5-2.

The Seasiders never trailed in the fifth set. With the score tied at 3, BYUH went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-4 lead. Faka'osi had five kills in the final set, including the final two points.

Ane Vea added 14 kills and Hannah Wilkinson and Tanza Buroker each had 10. Nobuko Kotoyori had 29 digs.

Katie Luna had 16 kills to lead Dixie State.

CHAMINADE SWEPT

Caitlin Torres had 17 kills to lead Notre Dame de Namur to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Chaminade in a Pacific West Conference match at Belmont, Calif.

Notre Dame de Namur improved to 7-13 overall and 5-2 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 2-15 and 1-7.

Whitney Viveiros led the Silverswords with 12 kills.

HPU LOSES IN FIVE

Dan Yang had 21 kills and 16 digs to lift Academy of Art to a 19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 15-5 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in a Pacific West match at San Francisco.

Academy of Art is 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the PacWest. HPU is 8-8 and 5-2.

Natasha Bell led HPU with nine kills and 14 digs.

VULCANS NO. 20; SEBEN HONORED

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team dropped one spot to No. 20 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll released yesterday.

The Vulcans (16-1, 6-1 PacWest) lost for the first time on Saturday at Dixie State (Utah). UH-Hilo went 3-1 on its road trip and plays at Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday.

Hawai'i-Hilo senior middle hitter Febiane Seben, of Caxias do Sul, Brazil, was named Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced yesterday.

Seben recorded 50 kills, seven aces, 11 block assists and three block solos last week in four matches.

TENNIS

UH PLAYERS ADVANCE IN TULSA QUALIFYING

Two University of Hawai'i players advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw yesterday at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

In his first match of the tournament, senior Andreas Weber defeated South Florida's Lucas Jovita, the top-seeded player entering the qualifier. Weber beat Jovita, ranked No. 48 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Weber, ranked No. 119, plays Dino Bilankov from Minnesota in the second round today.

UH sophomore Leo Rosenberg, who advanced to the qualifying rounds after a pair of wins in prequalifying, defeated Alistair Barnes from host Tulsa, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Rosenberg will face Sebastien Vidal from William and Mary today.

Rosenberg and Weber need two more wins to enter the main draw. UH junior Dennis Lajola, the last remaining member of the UH squad and the No. 43 player in the country, is automatically entered. The main draw begins Thursday.

Doubles competition begins today with six Rainbows in action.

GOLF

TING LOSES IN FIRST ROUND AT MID-AM

Wailuku's Desiree Ting lost in the first round of match play yesterday in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala, Fla.

Dawn Woodard of South Carolina defeated Ting, 4 and 2.

Ting fired rounds of 79-81 in the qualifier to advance to match play. There were four medalists, at 2-over-par 146. One of those medalists, Mina Hardin of Texas, was the only golfer to break 70 in qualifying, shooting 69 Sunday.

The Women's Mid-Amateur, for women amateurs age 25 and over, concludes Thursday.

At Kiawah Island, S.C., heavy rains forced USGA officials to postpone yesterday's first round of match play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club.

Hilo's Chris Igawa is scheduled to play Sean Knapp of Oakmont, Pa., in the first round today.

The USGA has scheduled the second round for this afternoon following the first round.

HPU'S RUMPF, BYUH WIN MATCH

Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i Pacific and Chaminade, while HPU's Connor Rumpf took medalist honors in a season-opening men's tri-match at the Turtle Bay Resorts' Fazio Course yesterday.

BYUH shot a 286, followed by HPU (292) and Chaminade (339).

Rumpf shot a 3-under 69, while BYUH's Doug Bischoff shot a 70.

SURFING

MILILANI'S BACALSO STANDS OUT IN SPAIN

Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani was the standout on the opening day of the Billabong Pro Mundaka men's surfing contest yesterday.

Eight heats of the first round were completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain, before the competition was halted due to deteriorating conditions.

Bacalso's two-wave score of 15.8 (out of 20) was the best heat of the day. He defeated wild card Hodei Collazo of Spain, 15.8-10.96.

Roy Powers of Kaua'i was eliminated in the first round by Brazil's Jihad Khodr.

Two other Hawai'i surfers — Fred Patacchia Jr. and Dustin Barca — have yet to surf their respective opening heats.

The contest is the eighth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.
