UH, UW expected to extend series

The University of Hawai'i and Washington will announce an extension of their football series, UH athletic director Jim Donovan confirmed yesterday.

It is believed the extension will start after 2012 and also be a home-and-home arrangement similar to the current one that expires in 2011, although Donovan declined comment pending a joint announcement by the two schools. The announcement could come as soon as today, officials said.

The Huskies played at Aloha Stadium in 2007 and UH is scheduled to appear in Husky Stadium in 2011. UH and UW have met three times with UH having won the last two for a 2-1 edge.

UH coach Greg McMackin has said he favors playing the Huskies because it will help the Warriors with recruiting in western Washington, where they have gotten a number of good players in the past, including Adam Leonard and the eight members of the Kafentzis family.

UH was scheduled to play Washington State here in 2011, the final game of a three-game series, but the Cougars last month announced they will pay $300,000 to buy their way out of the game under the terms of the contract.

UW has also recruited extensively in Hawaii'i, where current Huskies' coach Steve Sarkisian has been a frequent visitor.

Olin Kreutz, Leroy Lutu and Bern Brostek are among the Hawai'i products who have played for the Huskies.
