Man in standoff kills self, police say

Advertiser Staff

A man wanted by Maui police for questioning for robbery and other cases apparently fatally shot himself in a parked van in Lahaina yesterday, Maui County police said.

Police evacuated nearby residents and closed Ala Moana Road for several hours during a standoff that preceded the shooting.

The incident began at 12:20 p.m. when police officers approached the 44-year-old man, who was wanted for questioning for robbery, car theft and several violations of restraining orders. The man was in a van parked in front of the Lahaina Jodo Mission.

At one point police heard a shot fired inside the van. The area was secured, and the police Special Response Team and negotiators were sent to the scene.

At 6:45 p.m., after attempts to talk to the man were unsuccessful, officers approached the van and found him dead. Police said it appears he died of a self-inflicted wound.
