Crewman found dead aboard Japanese ship, foul play not suspected

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police are investigating the death of a crewman of a Japanese fishing ship whose body was found on the floor of the ship’s radio room early Monday morning.

Foul play is not suspected.
Police were told the Kagawa Maru was operating in international waters and that its captain last saw the radio operator alive and well in the ship’s radio room about 11 p.m. Sunday night.
The captain told police he went to check on the man about 1:30 Sunday morning after the radio operator failed to deliver an updated report to him from other vessels.
The captain reported finding the radio operator on the floor, with a trickle of blood coming out of his nose, and apparently lifeless.
The captain made the required notifications and headed for the nearest port, Honolulu, police said. The crew reported that the radio operator may have had a history of heart problems.
Police have classified the case as an unattended death.
