Tourney berths to be set this week

By Stacy Kaneshiro

It's down to the final regular season games for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red.

The top five teams from each division earn berths to the 10-team, four-tiered OIA tournament. The top three teams of each division draw first-round byes.

Seven teams have clinched berths, but six others still have hope for the remaining berths.

In the East, Kahuku (5-0), Farrington (4-1) and Castle (3-2) have clinched the top three seeds, respectively. Kaimuki (2-3), Kailua (2-4) and McKinley (1-4) are vying for the remaining two berths in the East. Only Roosevelt (1-4) is ousted by tiebreakers.

In the West, Mililani (4-1), Wai'anae (4-1), Leilehua (4-1) and Kapolei (4-2) have clinched berths, but a fifth seed and the seeding order is still up for grabs. Campbell (1-4), Waipahu (1-4) and Nanakuli (0-5) are still alive.

In possible three-way tie scenarios in both divisions, the involved teams have beaten one team, but not the other and all have same records against common opponents. In this case, a coin toss determines who is in.

This is what teams must do for seeding or earning a berth:

OIA RED EAST

Kahuku—Clinched top seed.

Farrington—Clinched second seed.

Castle—Clinched third seed.

Kaimuki—Must beat Farrington.

Kailua—Has a bye, but needs Roosevelt to beat McKinley.

McKinley—Must beat Roosevelt and have Kaimuki beat Farrington. Or, if Kaimuki loses, Kaimuki, Kailua and McKinley are in three-way tie for fifth to force a coin toss to eliminate one of them.

Roosevelt—Eliminated by tiebreakers.

OIA RED WEST

Mililani—Must beat Wai'anae to clinch top seed.

Leilehua—Must beat Waipahu and have Mililani lose to clinch top seed.

Wai'anae—Must beat Mililani and have Leilehua lose to clinch top seed.

Kapolei—Can finish no higher than third seed.

Campbell—Must beat Nanakuli to clinch fifth seed.

Waipahu—Must beat Leilehua and needs Campbell to lose.

Nanakuli—Must beat Campbell and needs Waipahu to lose for a three-way tie for fifth to force a coin toss.

The nine-team White Conference still has two more weekends to determine its four berths. Moanalua (6-0) and 'Aiea (5-1) have clinched half the field.

Meanwhile, Honoka'a (3-1) clinched the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I first-round title by beating Kealakehe (3-1), 7-6, last Friday. Hawai'i Prep (4-0) clinched the Division II first-round title two weeks ago, when it beat Konawaena.
