NHL: 5 taken to hospital after Blues escalator accident

Associated Press

ST. LOUIS — Authorities say five people were taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t considered serious after a crowded escalator malfunctioned following the St. Louis Blues’ home opener.

St. Louis Fire Capt. Bob Keuss says 13 people were injured, including four adults and a child who were taken to hospitals, after an escalator at the Scottrade Center malfunctioned around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. He said the injuries ranged from twisted ankles to back and neck pain.
Keuss says it appears that rails on the sides of the escalator that support its steps collapsed, causing the bottom four steps to buckle.
The Blues said in a statement Friday they are investigating the incident, noting that fan safety is their foremost concern.
