New plan starts Wednesday for Handi-Van registration

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu plans to start a new application system for eligibility for TheHandi-Van effective Wednesday, the city said yesterday.

Under the present system, decisions of eligibility to use the service are based on written information. The new system will allow people to more completely explain their specific circumstances and abilities. They will also be able to learn about other programs.

The new system involves in-person interviews. It will replace the previously required written application and certification of eligibility from applicants' health care or disability service providers, the city said. But applicants can still submit such information for consideration as part of their assessment. There is no fee.

The interviews will be done at the new TheHandi-Van Eligibility Center, at The First Insurance Center on 1100 Ward Ave., Suite 835.
