The cause of a fire at an improvised shack-like structure in Wainaku area north of the Wailuku Bridge is still under investigation, firefighters said.

The 7:56 p.m. fire was extinguished about 8:30 p.m. and had spread slowly to nearby brush. The area was abandoned and unoccupied, despite firefighters investigating for possible occupants. Highway 19 was closed between Waiauenue and Pukihae areas for about 45 minutes, firefighters said.
