LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Todd Reesing threw for 442 yards and four touchdowns and Kerry Meier set two school receiving records in leading No. 16 Kansas over Iowa State 41-36 today in a game filled with big plays and missed extra points.

Iowa State's Austen Arnaud, scrambling on fourth-and-9, had Darius Darks in the open in the end zone but overthrew him with a minute left and the Jayhawks (5-0, 1-0 in the Big 12) held on.

Reesing was 37 for 49 and tied his own school record with 37 completions. The Jayhawks scored twice in the fourth quarter after the Cyclones (3-3, 0-2) took a 30-27 lead behind Arnaud and Alexander Robinson, who ran for 152 yards and two TDs. Arnaud passed for 293 yards and two scores.

Meier had 16 catches for 142 yards and two TDs, and teammate Dezmon Briscoe had 12 catches for 186 and two more scores.

Meier now holds school records for career receptions and his 16 catches broke the single-game mark he had shared with Briscoe.

One of the biggest cheers of the day was for Jacob Branstetter's extra point following Kansas' second touchdown. Until then, he and Iowa State's Grant Mahoney had combined to go 0 for 3 on PATs, usually a non-suspenseful play.

After Reesing's 6-yard touchdown pass to Meier put Kansas ahead 41-30, Arnaud led the Cyclones down field and with 4:55 left connected with Darks on a 5-yard pass. But he missed a 2-point conversion pass attempt.

Arnaud was 25 for 40 for 293 yards.

Reesing, who already owns most of the school's passing records, hit Meier with a 3-yard TD pass late in the first half and then made it 20-12 with a 4-yard run up the middle with 30 seconds to go.

Iowa State, which squandered a 20-point halftime lead against Kansas last year, took a 23-20 lead in the third quarter with Grant Mahoney's 34-yard field goal and Arnaud's 2-yard run and 2-point conversion pass.

After Reesing's 23-yard TD pass to Briscoe put Kansas on top 27-23, Arnaud connected with Maquis Hamilton on a 17-yard scoring pass that gave Iowa State a 30-27 lead.

Back came the Jayhawks. Briscoe got open on a 46-yard scoring pass less than 1 minute into the fourth quarter Then with 8:43 left, Meier worked himself entirely free in the end zone and Reesing drilled the ball into his chest for a 41-30 lead.

Robinson, who sat out most of last week's game with a groin injury, scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards.

The day started brutally for Iowa State's special teams, continuing the nightmarish ending to a 24-23 loss the week before when Kansas State blocked Mahoney's PAT attempt with 31 seconds to go.

Until then, Mahoney had kicked 47 PATs in a row. But Saturday, he missed after each of the Cyclones' first two touchdowns. In the second quarter when Mahoney lined up for a 26-yard field goal attempt, holder Derec Schmidgall mishandled the snap. The Cyclones finally made something happen when Mahoney made good on a 34-yarder to cut the lead to 20-15 with 9:58 left in the third.

The career receptions record changed hands twice in the first half. Briscoe started the day with 153 and surpassed Mark Simmons' school record of 155 with his fourth catch, a second straight 13-yard gain fueling the Jayhawks first touchdown drive.

But by the end of the half, Meier had caught up. Meier, who started his career as a quarterback, began the day with 151 catches and had 11 for 98 yards in the first half, giving him 162 to Briscoe's 159. It's a record that's likely to be passed back and forth the rest of the season.
