Almost 5,000 gallons of sewage spill from manhole on Kapiolani

Advertiser Staff

Almost 5,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled today on Kapiolani Blvd., the city said.

Paper towels, a mop head and a toy doll’s long haired caused the sanitary sewer overflow at 909 Kapiolani, the Department of Environmental Services said.

ENV said the call came in at 10:41 a.m. Work crews arrived at the scene at 11:35 a.m. and secured the area at 1:35 p.m.

Approximately 4,950 gallons of raw sewage reached a storm drain on Waimanu Street, which leads to Kewalo Basin. The overflow came from a private manhole on the backside of the property. ENV cesspool trucks were able to recover another 3,500 gallons before it reached the storm drain.

The state Department of Health was notified. ENV crews cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the area surrounding the overflow, posted warning signs and took water samples.
