Warriors fend off host 'Iolani

By Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

Going back-and-forth all night, Kamehameha prevailed in one of its best matches so far.

Talia Jardin-Fermentez had 12 kills, Misty Ma'a had 11 and Taylor Akana added 10 to help Kamehameha outlast host 'Iolani, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls volleyball match last night.

The Warriors, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, finished the regular season at 15-2. The No. 7 Raiders (14-3) got 12 kills from Alissa Youart and 11 from Mahina Haina.

"Yesterday we had a team potluck and we said that we would stay together," said middle hitter Jardin-Fermentez. "All of us brought it tonight. We realized that it was an important game and we finally stepped it up and played our best tonight ... so far."

After close first and second sets, the Warriors ran out to a 10-3 lead in Set 3 before the Raiders, playing in front of a vocal home crowd on senior night, slowly chipped away at the deficit. Two blocks from Kamea Chock and a Youart ace made it 16-11, forcing Kamehameha to call a timeout.

Cara Rosehill responded with two kills out of the timeout for the Warriors and her team cruised ahead after Akana's kill made it 20-13.

'Iolani rallied again, cutting it to 22-18 on a block by Chock and Youart. Lumi Shimizu followed with an ace and Chock returned her shot that was blocked at the net to close it to 22-20.

Haina said her teammates told each other to "have fun and go all out."

"Just the little things, that's what mattered tonight," said Haina, who had lei adorned up to her face following the match. "We were right there."

Akana then had a kill off the block to make it 23-20, but Youart responded with a kill for 'Iolani. Kamehameha setter Kelci Renshaw followed with a dump shot to put the Warriors at match point.

Youart's cross-court kill that split the Kamehameha block made it 24-22, but the Warriors went back to their quick middle attack to end the match on Nicole Sniffen's kill.

"We were able to step back, breathe, and come back strong again," Jardin-Fermentez said.

The Warriors started Set 1 with a 6-2 lead, but the Raiders rallied to tie it at 12-12. Kamehameha led 13-12 after an 'Iolani error, and held a narrow lead until Haina's kill off the block gave 'Iolani a 24-23 lead.

The Warriors closed out the set with Jardin-Fermentez's kill in the middle, Akana's kill on the outside and Ma'a's ace.

Jardin-Fermentez's kill made it 24-23 in Set 2, but Youart's tip tied it 24-24, the 17th tie of the set. Youart then hit the ball out, but followed with a kill to tie it at 25-25.

Hitting errors by Ma'a and Amanda Wasko gave 'Iolani the set.

"We had a little mental lapse in Game 2, but we came back strong in the third set with the mindset of winning," Jardin-Fermentez said.

Punahou (17-0), the ILH regular-season champion, and Kamehameha both earned first-round byes in next week's ILH playoffs.
