THAT'S THE JUMP OFFS

Rock 'n' roll is sexy, and The Jump Offs are living proof of that. Their name comes from the saying "that's the jump off" — the hottest new thing, and that tag fits them like a favorite T-shirt.

"A friend of mine who moved away to Seattle would always say it. I pretty much stole it, I guess," says lead singer Landon Tom. The five guys are not flashy, but their sound is dancefloor-ready, contemporary indie rock — not too heavy, not too pop, but just right. Dedicated to their music, they practice in a tiny room off Dillingham weekly at around midnight to keep their sound tight, consistent and attractive. The group has been banging it out in the studio, gearing up for a self-titled album, to be released with a party this Saturday at NextDoor.
Inspired by the classics — flamboyant rock from the '60s and '70s — The Jump Offs aim to move you. Check out their new music at 9 p.m. Saturday, NextDoor Cinema Lounge and Concert Hall, 43 N. Hotel St.; $10 cover, 21 and over. Listen up at www.myspace.com/thejumpoffsmusic.

SWEET AND TANGY

Local girls Alizabeth Lerner and Kai Cost surprise us with the oh so laid-back yet decadent boutique Guava Shop in Hale'iwa.

Beachy-chic and filled with outfits that demand no more an occasion than a house party, Guava, just 1 year old, is a treat. Its spacious corner storefront across from Kua 'Aina is filled with racks and racks of everything you want to wear right now.

Here are our picks: super soft knits in avant garde cuts by Ella Moss, Splendid and LAMade, in mostly neutral colors with the occasional pop of color (just what a sunny afternoon requires); Salt swimwear (exclusive to Guava on O'ahu); Kaila Jewelry (made by co-owner Kai Cost); heavenly Kai Fragrance; and reasonably priced brands Indah and Alternative Apparel. Also worth noting: cute hats by San Diego Hat Co., Glam Vintage, Sacred Surf, and Made by Dawn Swimwear.

If that's not reason enough to trek to the North Shore, this Saturday Guava celebrates its first anniversary with a day full of in-store fun. Festivities include lots of sale merchandise, discounted spa treatments in a pop-up lounge, drinks, eats and guava cupcakes by House Baked Goods, along with live music from Hale'iwa musician Johnny Helm. Ten percent of all proceeds from Guava's birthday weekend will go to the Central Oahu Youth Services Association, Inc., a Hale'iwa-based nonprofit that provides 24-hour emergency shelter services for teens. Guava Shop, 66-165 Kamehameha Highway, Suite 4-4C, Hale'iwa; 637-9670, info@guavahawaii.com.

LMFAO

Looking for over-the-top excitement? Join the hype and peep the boys of LMFAO, creators of the hit song "I'm in Miami Trick." The Interscope Records artists make electro-rap, danceable pop, and their hit single is party-ready, and primed for exposure by its use on reality show "Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian Take Miami."

The artists known as Sky Blu and Redfoo have been working the club circuit for years, and their extreme fashion style adds to a vibrant stage presence. Their signature look of glasses with no lenses, big hair, electric colors and heavy accessories have them standing out in any crowd. They started by making original dance songs in their studio apartment; "I'm in Miami Trick" launched them on MySpace. Adding to their empire is a collection of self-designed shirts that they rock at every concert.

LMFAO appears in Honolulu straight off the plane from a tour of Australia with the Black Eyed Peas; brought to you by Vertical Junkies, 10 p.m. Friday at Pipeline Cafe; $30-$60; www.groovetickets.com, www.myspace.com/lmfao.

SALES & BARGAINS

• It’s not that often than stores have top to bottom, back to front sales, but right now Design within Reach is offering 15 percent off everything — lighting, chairs, dinnerware, tables, collectibles — during its semi-annual sale, through Tuesday. Spend $1,000 or more and they’ll ship your items free. For bigger savings, look for 50 percent off select floor models. Design Within Reach, Ala Moana Center; 941-2112, www.dwr.com.
• We’re heavy into the fall season in fashion, but it’s hot! One chic look we can pull off without causing us to sweat? A cinched-in waist. Any belt, thick or thin, shiny or textured, will put your look right in line with the fall trend. Belt a cardigan over a tank, along with a casual bottom such as a skirt or jeans, and you’ve just pulled a potentially sloppy look together. Use a belt you already have in your closet around your natural waist, or find fun looks at Club Monaco, DKNY or J.Crew-on-the-Island, all at Ala Moana Center. (Disclaimer: Not only do I love J.Crew-on-the-Island; I work there.)
• Clothes Chick, the Kapahulu consignment store with gently worn pre-worn items, is offering many pieces at just $5 right now. That means you can core a whole outfit for just 20 bucks! As with anything used, check to make sure the condition is good, and that there are no hidden stains or tears. Clothes Chick, 415 Kapahulu Ave., 739-2442.
• Shopping Tip: We all know a closet full of clothes doesn’t mean you have a wardrobe. Save money and time when you seek out a personal shopper who will outfit you with a wardrobe that works for you. Most department and many specialty stores offer this service free of charge, since you will be encouraged to buy clothes. Often by simply signing up for this service you can become eligible for special deals or early notification on when new goods have hit the racks, and get first dibs, before items your size are snatched up by the masses (sizes 4 to 8, you know who you are). Personal shoppers are available at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Macy’s, in addition to many specialty stores. Find someone great, and you’ll end up with a wardrobe, not a closet full of incongruent pieces.
