One person was killed and another suffered severe burns in a fire that destroyed an Ulupalakua house early yesterday morning, Maui County officials said.

Fire crews from Kula, Makawao and Kahului responded to the fire on Kini Drive in Ulupalakua.

The fire was reported at 1:13 a.m. and was under control by 2:17 a.m. Fire officials said the house had three occupants.

One was uninjured. A man who was badly burned was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and then taken to a burn unit at Straub Hospital on O'ahu.

During the cleanup and dousing of remaining hot spots, the body of a woman was discovered. She is believed to be a visitor from Washington state. Her identity has not been released.

Maui Fire Department and police arson investigators estimate damage at $140,000. There were no signs of foul play, officials said.
