No. 20 Hilo beats HPU in PacWest volleyball

Josimara Pinheiro had 12 kills and 14 digs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Hawai'i Pacific, 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

Fabiane Seben and Kawena Cubi-Otineru each had 11 kills, Leilani Ramsey added 10 kills and Katie Swenson had 51 assists for the 20th-ranked Vulcans (17-1, 7-1).

Kelly Balanay had 14 kills, Julia Gruszecka added 13 kills and Kyra Pelayo had 20 digs for the Sea Warriors (8-9, 5-3).

Also yesterday:

• Courtney Lorusso had 21 kills as Chaminade beat Westminster (Utah), 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, in a non-conference match at McCabe gym. Chauntelle Maduli added 13 kills and 16 digs for the Silverswords (3-15). Becky Burke led the Griffins (6-15) with 12 kills.

HILO BEATS DIXIE

Eduardo Gutierrez scored with one second left as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Dixie State, 1-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's match at St. George, Utah.

Jaaziel Garcia intercepted the ball with about 15 seconds to play and headed it to Luis Segovia, who sent a cross to Gutierrez for the Vulcans (5-6, 4-1). Dixie is 3-5-1, 1-4.

Also in the PacWest:

• Wendy Stratford scored in the 108th minute as Dixie State (6-3, 5-0) beat Hawai'i-Hilo (3-6-2, 2-2-1), 2-1, in double overtime of a women's match at St. George, Utah.

• Sam Akinaka scored in the 53rd minute as Brigham Young-Hawai'i (3-6-1, 2-3-1) beat Academy of Art (4-8-1, 1-6), 1-0, in a men's match at San Francisco.

• Lauran McCullough had two assists as Brigham Young-Hawai'i (7-2, 5-1) beat Academy of Art (0-10-2, 0-5-2), 5-0, in a women's match at San Francisco.

• Meghan Fuller scored three goals as Hawai'i Pacific (6-3-1, 4-2) beat Notre Dame de Namur (3-9-1, 3-2-1), 4-1, in a women's match at Belmont, Calif.

• Arturo Gomez scored two goals as Notre Dame de Namur (4-8-1, 4-1-1) beat Hawai'i Pacific (6-2-1, 3-2-1), 3-0, in a men's match at Belmont, Calif.

• Kyle Ciliento scored three goals as Grand Canyon (10-1-1, 7-0) beat Chaminade (1-7, 0-5), 5-0, in a men's match at Phoenix, Ariz.

• Grand Canyon (5-5-2, 2-3-2) outshot Chaminade (0-8, 0-5) 44-1 en route to a 7-0 victory in a women's match at Phoenix, Ariz.

CROSS COUNTRY

BYUH SWEEPS

Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept the team titles of the Hawai'i-Hilo Invitational yesterday.

The Seasider women won with 25 points and the men with 31 points. Hawai'i Pacific was second in both races with 32 and 51 points, respectively.

Hawai'i Pacific's Quinn Horochuk won the women's 6-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 34 seconds.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Spencer Davila won the men's 6-kilometer race in 20:45.
